Year in Review, 2007 Newsletter

Seasons Greetings!

As 2007 comes to a close, we would like to take a moment to reflect on the past year. Despite difficulties such as rising hay prices, and a surplus of horses needing homes, RERSI made it through 2007 with many accomplishments, thanks to you, our dedicated supporters.

We're very proud of our joint venture with Leg-Up Counseling. Now our rescued horses are giving back and helping humans in need as well. There is nothing so beautiful as horses and children healing each others wounds.

We are also proud to have found loving homes for ten of our rescued horses this past year. There are many stories with happy endings, among some of them are: *Angie (now Jetta)- An off the track thoroughbred who had been at RERSI for several years. Due to a broken coffin bone, she could not be jumped, but she loved being ridden on the trail. Sadly we found that not many people will consider a thoroughbred mare for a trail horse, but after many years, Angie was lucky enough to find a person who would. She now thinks she's in heaven with a human all her own to spoil her. *Cody- A halflinger paint cross who we rescued in 2006 from a kill pen in a PA auction. Cody was quite possibly the most frightened rescue we have ever had. He was completely unhandled at the time of rescue, and it took several months just to be able to touch him. After many months of kindness and attention from our wonderful volunteers, Cody proved to be one of the most gentle and well mannered ponies we have ever met. He was adopted into a wonderful home, where he continues to get lots of love and attention. *Promise- An Arabian cross PMU foal that we rescued from a kill pen at a PA auction when she was barely a year old. Promise was so malnourished and sick with strangles at the time of rescue, that we had doubts that she would survive. After months of antibiotics and lots of hand feedings, she pulled through! Promise has been adopted into a loving home, and she will never face starvation or an auction house again.

These are only three stories out of many. Since opening our doors we have rescued thirty-eight equines and counting. We currently have nine adoptable horses waiting for caring homes of their own, each with their own story telling of how they got here, and why they deserve a loving home of their own too.

To continue our mission we need help with money for veterinary, farrier, and feed bills. We have no paid staff, and rely solely on public donations to continue our work. It is because of you that we have been able to save these thirty-eight horses, and we need your help to continue saving more. Any size donation is greatly appreciated, and is goes directly to the horses. We also have beautiful RERSI calendars available for any donation of $20 or more. We are a 501(C) 3 nonprofit and your donation is tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.

Thanks again for your help, we couldn't do this without you. Here's to a great 2008!

PS: Look for us at the Maryland Horse Expo Booth 3609 in the 4-H Building!
