2007 Newsletter
Dear
Friends and Supporters,
It has
been a difficult yet promising summer here at RERSI.
Perhaps
the most exciting news is our newfound working
partnership with Leg-Up Counseling. For those of you
who may not know, Leg-Up Counseling is a wonderful
program that uses horses for equine assisted
psychotherapy, equine assisted learning, and healing
horsemanship. In August, Alyssa was hired on with
Leg-Up Counseling as an equine professional. The
program has previously “employed,” adopted RERSI
horses, but now for the first time it also makes use
of RERSI’s adoptable and sanctuary horses. Among the
horses who volunteer, our very own Angel, has become
quite the therapist. We’re so very excited to be a
part of the Leg-Up team. Now we are not just humans
saving horses, but our rescued horses are giving
back and healing humans as well!
More
good news is that our adoptable horses are
continuing to thrive. Among our NINE adoptable
horses; Sonny is in professional training with Kris
Morris of Fat Chance Farm, and improving more each
day. We’re confident that with Kris’s help, Sonny
will soon be ready for a forever home. More great
news is that, Promise, the filly who we were worried
about surviving severe malnutrition and strangles
last year when she came to us, is now beautiful,
healthy, and so fat we had to put her on a diet!
Now the
difficult part: winter is always a tough time for
the horse market, but due to a variety of factors
this year is worse that most. Hay prices are
increasing this winter drastically, in addition to
the large influx of horses from the closing
slaughter plants. Horse rescues are needed now more
than ever, but it’s difficult if not impossible to
save more horses when adoptions have come to a
standstill. Here at RERSI, we had planned on
rescuing two more PMU foals this fall, but with nine
horses waiting for homes, as well as several
sanctuary horses, we have to consider the wellbeing
of the horses we are currently caring for first and
foremost.
Since
opening our doors we have rescued 35 horses and
counting! To continue caring for, and saving these
wonderful animals, we need your support like never
before. Please if you know someone looking for a
horse, ask them to consider adoption first.
Donations are also essential to keep our operations
running. They can be made directly to us, sent to
FEED PLUS to be put on our feed account directly or
even sent straight to our veterinarian, Russ
Jacobson, to be put on our account. We also have a
wish list of fly spray, medical supplies, wormer,
breakaway halters, hay, etc. Anything we can’t use
ourselves is sold to support the rescue. We are a
501©3 nonprofit so all donations are tax deductible,
and very much appreciated!
As
always thank you for your continued support. Without
you none of this would be possible. We’re sure if
they could talk, the horses would thank you as well!
Yours Truly,
Alyssa C. Taylor
