John began his love of horses at an early age. When
he was six years
old he learned
to ride at McDonogh School. Every year thereafter, the riding
program
was a big part of
his life. John learned to ride steeple chase and
enjoyed running
the trial course for the
Maryland Hunt Cup which, at the time,
was on the McDonogh School
grounds. He also
enjoyed serving as a guide
for the younger students on trail rides
through an area
that is now, sad to say,
mostly developed.
As a member of the senior class of 1972, John was in the last
group of
students to
enjoy the McDonogh Show Cavalry Unit. In a series of intricate
maneuvers, with magnificent
uniforms, lances and sabers, on horses with
gleaming tack, the two
competing units put on
a marvelous show each year.
Very few riders have an opportunity to
demonstrate the art of
mounted soldiers
performing precision drill exercises. The sound of a
line of thirty horses
cantering
across a field is amazing and must have surely overwhelmed
the foot soldiers of
old.
John continues in his love of horses; magnificent, gentle,
beautiful animals,
through his service on our Board.
In his primary career, John is a physician. He is also a licensed
pyrotechnic
display operator. John has served on numerous Boards and
recently retired,
after six years in office,
as the presiding officer of the Pyrotechnics Guild
International, a
4000 member organization
with an annual budget of a half million
dollars. His regulatory and
contractual expertise and his experience in Board
service for other
organizations make him a welcome addition to our Board.
