From Humble Beginnings
Written By Alyssa C. Taylor;
RERSI Cofounder
It all began with a horse
appropriately named Angel …
Dear Caring Friend:
Three young horses (PMU foals) ran off of the trailer,
their manes long and tangled,
their eyes filled with fear. Two quickly retreated to
the back of the barn and began
eating hay. Still obviously frightened, their hunger
overcame their fear. This place
surely seemed friendlier than the killer buyer's pen
from which they'd been saved
only hours before.
The third horse, a filly, was too weak to be afraid, and
too sick to be interested in food.
She allowed us to touch her and look her over. By far
she was in the worst shape of
the three. Her bones protruded through her thick winter
coat, and her head hung low.
She was extremely malnourished, and sick with strangles.
We wondered if she would make it at all…..
It was just a year ago when those sick, frightened
horses walked off of the trailer and
into our lives -- to see them now they look like
different animals. They are
different animals. Beautiful, strong, healthy, and no
longer afraid, they are now ready
for homes of their own. (Yes, that is the filly
“Promise,” pictured on the adoptable horses
page page; she made a miraculous recovery with lots of
TLC).
I
wish I could tell you this was an isolated event,
that its unusual to find such cruelty in the world of
horses…
But I can’t.
We see it all too often,
which is why we opened Royal Equine Rescue & Sanctuary,
Inc. in 2004.
For those of you who may not know us yet, RERSI is a
501©3 nonprofit horse rescue
located in Harford County, Maryland. It is our mission
to rehabilitate the bodies and
minds of horses in need. Since opening our doors in
2004, we have successfully rescued, rehabilitated, and
carefully re-homed 35 horses and counting. With the
cooperation of our carefully selected adopters, we keep
track of our rescued horses throughout their lives.
We have also helped others to place countless horses in
safe homes through our courtesy placement program. We
get at least five calls per week asking if we can take
in horses that people no longer want or cannot afford to
care for. Sadly we have to say no; we just cannot afford
to take them. Instead we offer a free courtesy posting
and we help to list the horses through our Web site and
rescue networks. Although we do not charge for that
service, donations are always welcome.
Our rescue serves all horses, from off-the-track
thoroughbreds
to PMU foals to the injured and forgotten.
But to continue saving them we need your help.
Winter is approaching and
is always a tough time for the horse market.
Due to the drought, soaring hay prices and sluggish
economy, this year is worse
than most. The U.S. slaughter plants have closed,
flooding rescues with an influx of
sick horses. Horse rescues are needed now more than
ever, but it’s difficult if not
impossible to save more horses when adoptions have come
to a standstill. Here at
RERSI, we have nine horses waiting for homes, as well as
several sanctuary horses,
and we are hoping to be able to save two more PMU foals
… but we need your help ….
To continue caring for, and saving these wonderful
animals, we need your support like
never before. Donations are essential to keep our
operations running. RERSI receives
no government funding, we rely 100% on the generosity of
concerned individuals like
yourself. Donations can be made directly to us, sent to
FEED PLUS to be put on our
feed account directly or even sent straight to our
veterinarian, Russ Jacobson, to be put
on our account. No donation is too small. We have NO
paid staff; all donations go directly
to the horses in our care. Just $10 will pay for a tube
of wormer, $25 will pay for a horse’s
feet to be trimmed, $60 will pay for a set of shoes, and
$150 will pay for a month’s feed for
one horse. We also have a wish list of fly spray,
medical supplies, wormer, breakaway
halters, hay, etc. Anything we can’t use ourselves is
sold to support the rescue. We are
a 501©3 nonprofit so all donations are tax deductible,
and very much appreciated! Also,
please, if you know someone looking for a horse; ask
them to consider adoption first.
As always thank you for your continued support. Without
you none of this would be possible. We’re sure if they
could talk, the horses would thank you as well!

P.S.:
For the first time ever RERSI has created a calendar
with photos of our rescued horses
for 2008! Calendar orders can be made at anytime. Prices
and information is posted on
the Web Site. The calendars are filled with beautiful
photographs and make great stocking stuffers or holiday
presents!
Please help us with your most generous gift today, so
that we can say yes to saving
the two PMU foals pictured below. Both colts are
scheduled to come to RERSI this winter,
but we need your help to save them. Can you look into
their eyes and say no? Please help,
we are their last hope.......
