Mighty's Story
On 2/11/2008 we
rescued this little two and a half
week old miracle.
"The Thoroughbred
stallion, or Mighty," as he has been
nicknamed, has been a fighter from
the start. He was born a twin, and
amazingly he, his sister, and his
dam all survived the birth.
Sadly, from there not
being enough space in the birth
canal he was born with contracted
tendons. He also is mostly cartilage
and his bone has not grown in
completely yet, and has other
difficulties to overcome including,
an infection, some neurological
dysfunction, and a mild rupture of
his lateral extensor tendon.
Because he obviously
will never become a racehorse, his
owners were considering euthanasia.
The barn staff, and his
veterinarian, believed that with the
right care he could grow up to be a
comfortable happy horse, with a
career in less strenuous discipline.
That's how "The
thoroughbred Stallion," came to be a
RERSI horse.
He still has a long
road ahead, but our veterinarian is
optimistic. He is a fighter, and
runs and bucks in his stall. He is
learning to drink his milk from a
bucket, and his wonderful foster
home, have helped one of their mares
to adopt him and teach him about
being a horse.
We need help with
donations for this special horses
care. The bags of milk that he needs
are more than $100. per bag! He will
also require surgery when he is one
and a half months old to straighten
his front leg (plus he needs to
become a THOROUGHBRED GELDING). Our
veterinarian said the surgery for
his leg will likely be in the ball
park of $600. We will also need to
do periodic x-rays to check his
bones for growth, and for OCD
lesions, and arthritis.
PLEASE NOTE
This foal is NOT for adoption at
this time. He has a long road ahead,
and we are committed
to keeping him
here so that we may oversee his care and be sure he has every
opportunity
to thrive. He has the
potential to become a great horse,
but he will also need lots of TLC for
a long time to come, and at for
the time being, he is a welcome
addition to our sanctuary program. |
